Adrenal Health and Burnout

What is the adrenal gland and what is it in charge of?

Your adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate:

  • *Blood pressure
  • *Immunity
  • *Flight or fight response (stress response)
  • *Sleep cycle and wake cycle
  • *Blood sugar balance
  • *Body weight and Metabolism

Symptoms of Adrenal gland problems include:

  • *Fatigue and brain fog
  • *Sleep issues
  • *Weight gain, resistant weight loss or drastic weight loss
  • *Cravings
  • *Digestive issues
  • *Thyroid imbalances

Adrenal imbalances are often called HPA Axis issues. The HPA axis is a term used to represent the interaction between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands; it plays an important role in the stress response.

When faced with high levels of stressors that come from consuming processed foods, alcohol, coffee, sugar, exposure to pollution or chemicals, or the pressures of life then the adrenal glands need to work harder. If they are pushed too hard they flip a switch inside your body that puts you into survival mode. When the switch is off you are thriving and your metabolism is working. When the switch is on your body struggles to function efficiently.

Think of it like a hospital. When the hospital is working normally there are elective surgeries scheduled in, regular surgeries and the emergency room. But when a catastrophe happens (like an earthquake) the hospital goes into emergency mode. All elective surgeries get cancelled and all the doctors get sent to the emergency ward. It's the same in your body, when you have a stress response your body goes into emergency mode and all “non-essential” processes get turned off. When you are stressed blood pressure goes up, blood gets sent to the brain and heart, you are more alert, focused and energised. What gets put into "off mode" is your metabolism, digestion, repair and immunity work. There is no issue with this response- unless this is a chronic response- like chronic stress.
